Two possibilities come to mind.

1) Carb floats and fuel valves.  If the car has been sitting a while the
needles and seats may have "gummed up."  A carb rebuild is in order.  At
least take the pistons out and the float chambers off and clean everything
with 'Gumout'.

2) (Not very likely) The 74 and later models have an Anti-Run-On system to
prevent diesling.  If there is a problem with the charcoal canister it could
possibly pressurize the float chamber causing the gasoline geyser.  Remove
the hoses which connect to the left side of the carbs near the air filters.
