blue smoke

I originally appended this query to an earlier message, but thought I would
try and fish for a few more responses by reposting it. When decelerating
or descending steep hills on the over-run, with the engine warmed up, our
2L Vitesse pumps out a fair bit of blue smoke. When idling or taking off
from a standstill no blue smoke appears. The compression with the engine
warm appears fine (actually slightly higher than specs, admittedly measured
with cheap KMart gauge). The valve guides and exhaust valves were recently
replaced and the PCV is not blocked.
On the other hand, the carbs are worn and out of adjustment and
the engine has consequently been running rich for a while (causing oil
dilution?). Can anyone suggest a possible cause for the smoke or any
diagnostic tests? The engine (after 90k miles) is fairly worn, but if the
smoke problem can be rectified I would prefer to prolong the inevitable
overhaul for a while.

Thanks in advance for any responses, Pat Edwards.
