Odds are it's a worn or even broken leaf spring, an all-to-common 
problem on Spitfire 1500s. Replacement with a new spring is your best 
bet. Unfortunately, I don't know if that's an absolutely permanent cure; 
maybe the replacement springs are better than the originals?
