 John,
        If indeed the lamp sockets of the 69 spit are corroded, causing 
 the brake lights to not function, try this.  
        I've used a solution of H2SO4 with good luck in cleaning the 
 sockets of light assemblies.  Just stick a toothbrush in your battery 
 cell, dab a bit onto the light assembly and rinse off in a minute or 
 too.  It takes the corrosion off effectively leaving a clean metal 
 surface.
