Alger?

I am an original owner of a Tiger that I purchased in Dec. of 1964. Have been
reading the mail on this list for some time now. A lot of interesting stories
and info but one thing has got my curiosity up. An Alger is obviously an Alpine
that someone has put a V-8 in. My question is where did the name Alger come
from.
