Hey Bob -
Sorry we missed you at VIR - its a wonderful track and a great event. As one
of the few non Healey Thickos we really had a ball. Lots of stuff for the
kids to do (ride bikes, feed ducks at the pond and so on) and while some
track time for me, lots for the Brit cars and Healeys. I got 4th OA in the
race and 2nd in class. A decent run. Fast cars and on the pole was our own
Lou Rohan, but he didn't race as his wife got sick and they left early. Jim
Fuerstenberg had a good run in his Mini. The track owner runs in our group
and is a nice, approachable guy. A GREAT track - a combo of Mid Ohio and
Road Atlanta - that just rocks. Put on you "must do" list of tracks for your
portfolio.
The other outstanding thing done at this track is the way Peter Krause moves
cars around thru the course of the weekend to keep the run groups close in
lap times. He's the best. VSCDA could learn from him how to rearrange
classes. BTW, any Peter Krause speaking - chalk talks, Driver's meetings,
etc - are not to be missed. He is a great dynamic emotional speaker who is
funny and serious in the same sentence. Great guy - clear direction for all.
Another opinion I will put for this on BRIC and ELVF. Bottom line - I
suggest going to the BRIC to watch and going to ELVF to race. I love Road
America. It is a mecca and a privilege everytime you put a tire on the
track. But although the BRIC is not the original Chicago Historics there are
a lot of interesting, fast, unique cars that show up for the event. The
parking lot is often just as interesting as the cars on the track. But the
high rollers may race just one event a year and there is a lot of crappy
driving with a minimum of track time. Oh, did you notice the fees? I used
to run the original Chicago Historics in the 80's and into the 90's and the
BRIC is not that gala event. The last few years I came to the BRIC stroll
the paddock, see friends I rarely see and watch a bunch of run groups I don't
get to see when stuck in "the compound" working on my car or some food prep.
There is also a fun concours on the streets of Elkhart Lake.
So come to Road America in the fall for the VSCDA Elkhart Lake Vintage
Festival. Its a more relaxed event, lots of good racers in the true grass
roots style of vintage racing. Might be cold or raining - but hey, that's
racing. Its often sunny and beautiful. And its featured marque makes it a
"must do" event for Healey racers.
