The main purpose of the rod (as I understand it besides being a convenient
place to hang a vertically adjustable rear view mirror) was to prevent
(weathered tops shrink over time) top from "pulling" (and thus unsealing) the
top window frame from the window?
As to "timing" of the change.....I bow to the
superior knowledge of the "Italian stallion"
of Spridetdom who detests (with good reason) all parts "foreign" to the
original. :)
