While were on the subject of rust removal, I have used muriatic acid to
remove rust. work great either straight or diluted in water. You get pretty
nasty fumes from using it straight so submerging parts in a dilution in
water is slower but a bit easier to manage. The only problem I've
encountered is that the metal will rapidly develop surface rust if not
painted right away. Someone suggested a good rinsing in warm water (which I
do anyway) and spraying with WD40 until it ready to be painted.

I'm wondering if any of you chemists out there know of another way to
neutralize/stabilize the metal after getting it clean.

P.S. If anyone decides to use muriatic acid, take extra care using it as it
is very corrosive and give off very strong vapors. Use in good ventilation.
