hi all -

When I bought my (73) midget, it came with an aftermarket muffler
installed. I can't read a name on it, but it has a decal with a Monza-like
stallion on it, and sounds as if it is some sort of free-flow muffler.
Rather than the stock set-up (for '73) which has one unit oriented
lenthwise, then a second unit mounted transversely, with the tailpipe
exiting from the passenger side, my exhaust consists of the long, straight
pipe from the manifold, then just the one muffler, which exits on the
driver's side.

My question is this: I am getting some rumbling when I back off the
throttle at speed (which I kinda like), but also a lot of crackling and
backfiring between shifts (which i don't like so much). Is this normal for
a free-flow type muffler? Is my car just poorly tuned (timing, etc.)? Or
did the switch from a two-unit to a single unit exhaust cause too much of
? something, resulting in the noisy, bordering on embarassing, exhaust.

I'm considering replacing what I have with a stock set-up, in order to tone
it down a little. Should I buy from Moss? From Meineke or Midas, etc? Or
does anyone have a muffler & tailpipe section from a (70-74?) in good shapr
that they want to sell cheap?

Anything else I should consider? Can I assume that my straight pipe is
more or less universal, and will accept the stock muffler section? Or
could it be from a different year car, and in some way different?

The weather in southwestern PA has been beautiful the past few days (mid
70s to 80s). There's just nothing like tooling around with the top down on
a sunny day!
