Leaking from the front of the sump and timing cover is a very frequent
occurrence on 1500's. I believe the front plate, behind the timing chain
cover has at least two bolts that go through it into the sealing block and a
couple more that go into the block. If you have the engine out, along with
the trans for that throughout pin problem, you might want to go ahead and re
gasket that whole front end to assure you get the leak, including behind the
front plate, if your going that far you may as well replace the timing chain
and tensioner as well. The sealing block should be able to be removed without
removing the timing cover but you may need to unbolt those bottom two bolts
of the timing cover, that may be enough to create a leak there, suggest new
gasket and timing cover oil seal, then again timing cover bolts may not go
into the sealing block. The trick will be getting the sealing block back in
while the engine is in the car, isn't it right over the front crossmember.
The front sealing block uses a wood insert on both sides that must be driven
in and cut flush. Additionally you have to use a gasket for the sealing block
and the sealing block is held in by two standard head screws, gotta be a
frustrating job to do while the engine is in the car. Take special caution
with any of the bolts that go into the sealing block as it is made of soft
metal and you will strip threads too easily, you will wish you hadn't if you
do. Use a good sealant on the gaskets for insurance against leaks. Best of luck
