Take the oil out while the trans is out of the car, but don't replace it until
 the trans is back in.  This will save you the extra weight of half a gallon of
 oil while you try and manouvre the gearbox back into place.

The job is easiness itself - remove the plug at the bottom to let the oil out,
 remove the plug at the side to re-fill, fill up until the oil reaches the
 level of the re-fill hole.  MUCH easier to do while you still have the gearbox
 cover off!

Some people seem keen on sump plugs with magnets on to collect metal shavings,
 so you could replace your sump plug with one of these while you had it out.
