Kirk, if it means anything I paid $600 plus cost of seals and gears replaced
to redo my TR8 gearbox this year.

Kirk,

I found that the price I was quoted for gearbox repair, excluding parts, was
the
same price as a reconditioned o/d gearbox from John Kipping. The gearbox
cost
me £150 ($250), and has been in my car for several months (including three
round-trips of 200+ miles) with no problems at all. I don't know what the
cost
of gearboxes is in the States, but add about $150 labour for fitting a new
gearbox (unless you want to do that yourself), and shipping from the UK, and
the
Kipping gearbox will work out about the same price as getting your own
gearbox
fixed. Of course, if gearboxes are about the same price in the States, then
you'll save yourself a fortune in shipping if you order from somewhere
else....

I have a 68 spit with 74 overdrive tranny in it. The tranny needs to be
repaired. It pops out of gear and grinds a little when going into 2,3,4. I
got
a ball park estimate of $600 assuming new seals, and syncros. Not including
bearings or gears. I have already removed the top, passenger seet, tunnel
and
most carpet, so it is easy to get the tranny in and out. This should save
on
labor time. The shop is Lomita Sports Car in So Cal.

Is this a good estimate? Is there another shop nearby you recommend?
Please
respond soon, as I would like to get it in the shop in the next couple of
days.
