I replaced the pinion seal in my 71 in 1997. I did not have a torque wrench that
went to 90, so I guessed at the proper torque. I don't think the noise is due to
the nut if it's tight and pinned. It sounds like you did a more thorough job at
this than I did, and I haven't had any problems since '97 (Other than the new
seal leaking more than it should). I had a deep rumbling noise that seemed to
come from the diff while coasting. Replacing a half-shaft U-joint a few weeks
ago cured that problem.
