Marty,

I just did this to my Spitfire over the last week. The stereos that are out
there certainly fit easily within the slot available on my center dash
support. In fact the hole was too large for the stereo I bought (a Sony on
sale). So for $5 I was able to get a plastic blocking piece (that matches
the black vinyl quite nicely) and screw it into the back side of support.
The stereo fits in perfectly now, and the face removes to discourage anyone
from cutting through the top to get to it. For speakers I bought 2 6X9's
along with two enclosure boxes. These I've put into the boot behind the
seats. To help anchor them, I'm using earthquake straps (heavy duty Velcro
that they sell everywhere in SoCal) to anchor the boxes around the seatbelt
mounts. I'm only going to have rear speakers for now. My Spit has only a
single front speaker in the "glove box" area, and since this whole project
started out as a swap to an O/D gearbox, I can't keep continuing any further
for the time being. Someday I may re-visit what to do about sound from the
front, but my TR3 is feeling rather neglected at the moment.
