Sounds like a good plan to me. Any residual aluminum shavings will get caught 
by the screen and filter along with all the other shavings from a new motor. I 
wouldn't bother with removing the pan except that I could then mount it in a 
press and stop the drill bit from grabbing the material as it breaks through 
and pulling itself into the baffles.
