Yes, I agree with him for the "average" driver/car. I think, though,
that there may be some benefit for some of us in non-average
situations. As for science, there are some interesting articles here:

There are scientific articles here that present some real
data. Again, these don't mean it's right for you, but they contain
some interesting information.
