The data bits that make up the sounds you hear are gathered together in packets
to travel the Internet.  "Buffering" refers to the process of storing one or
more packets, then playing the data at the proper rate while  additional packets
come in.  What is happening is that your computer is not getting the next packet
in time to play it.  When the buffer is empty, it was to stop playing and wait
for more packets to come in.

If there is a setting for buffer size, or minimum data stored before starting
playback, increasing it may help.  But most likely it won't (and the player I
use doesn't have knobs for these numbers).  You might look into whether you can
find the same program in a non-streaming format, so it's all on your hard drive
before you start to listen.  A new ISP or higher bandwidth link might help too,
but again most likely not.
