coating on brass

I've got some brass door hardware that is now black...  I want to buff it out
but want to remove the "clear" finish that is on it first.. I've tried lacquer
thinner to no avail.... what will cut this stuff ???  so instead of burning it
off with the buffer I can get right to polishing the brass ???
