There might be some mileage here if you've got a powerline connection 
between house and workshop (note the comment on range):

This example is aimed at the UK market but there must be US versions.

The technology was being promoted when I started messing with Bluetooth a 
while back. Wish I'd opted for the powerline route then, probably will 
change soon. The type I saw didn't include wi-fi.
