What has often ruined work for me has been poor tolerances on hardware-store stuff. In particular, Ace brand (NOT related to the hardware chain AFAIK) taps and dies have tended to cut too much - undersize screws and oversized tapped holes. BEWARE, and check before investing. Real machine-shop tools have never given me that trouble. Thankfully, my grandfather and a few other old machinist friends gave me their collections decades ago, so I seldom have to use the consumer stuff. Karl |
