I suspect that it's because the shipping price is actually included in
the prices. I tend to collect the catalogs and buy what ever I'm going
to order at the lowest price - usually around half the "normal" price.
That means that most things are marked up 100% from the "real selling
price" and it most likely covers the shipping. A lot of people just
buy the stuff at the "regular" prices...
Of course I really don't know anything at all...
