I'd second the motion on this idea...
my $.02 on top of that is...

use the ready made items as a starting point. use your skills and tools to
modify/ add to them...then you're spending your time and money more wisely.

for example, I bought the HF 2 ton engine crane (cherry picker) in the mid
80's after the same analysis as the gantry crane, then added on an electric
hoist and pulleys to allow me to raise and lower drivetrain on crane while
under the car and aligning the mounts/ bellhousing/ whatever...much easier
than jumping up and down to use the hydraulic ram; the ram still works the
boom, and a cable over pulleys raises the load.
