I used a floor standing (unvented, obviously) kerosene heater in my garage 
a few times.  Every time I used it I got a headache.  Went to a vented 
propane heater instead.  The theory is that if the combustion is clean and 
complete enough, it can be unvented.  If you're inclined to try it, make 
sure you have a carbon monoxide detector.  I also don't think the unvented 
heaters are legal everywhere.
