I'm not sure this would work for you, Wayne, but I have a somewhat similar
problem with my patio roof.  Last time I cleaned it's gutter, I made up a
10' section of PVC pipe, with a "sidewalk washer nozzle" mounted at an angle
at the end; and fed the other end with a garden hose.  Worked pretty good at
cleaning the gutter without having to climb a ladder, although as you
mentioned, it made a dickens of a mess both on the ground/patio and on me.
The pipe was fairly floppy, but I was able to control it well enough to
flush out the debris.
