When the blocks do crumble, they do so without warning.  BTDT.

I believe the issue is one of load distribution, if the blocks are laid with
the holes horizontal, the relatively thin part over the hole is not strong
enough.  If the weight is centered over the web in the center, the block may
never crumble.
