John,
I'm no Kohler pro but I just thumbed my Chilton book and it thinks anything
under 100 psi compression indicates ring &/ valve work. They want 110 to 120
psi. Just a thought but: I've had single cylinder engines do weird thing as a
result of malfunctions in the crankcase vent provision. That Kohler single 12
hp is 30 cid and the crankcase volume varies by 30 ci on every revolution unlike
most multi-cylinder engines. I had _some_ motor, maybe a Tecumseh, turn itself
into an "oil pump" when the vent system screwed up . . . I replaced the vent
system and it quit using oil . . . I hope you are that lucky.
