I'm not a Kohler expert, but you can have great
compression and a sacked oil scraper ring, and it would
run fine and smoke like a chimney, especially if the gaps
on the compression rings are not staggered.

I have to assume this is a side valve engine, so generally
the valve guides won't cause this much smoking, unlike an
OHV engine.  

On the other hand, if this is an OHV engine, then the
valve guides also would be suspect.

I would replace the oil ring first and see what happens.
