Hi Eric.

I don't know about the type of ladder that you describe from experience,
but I would recommend an alternative. I have a Werner step ladder that
can be converted to a straight ladder. One side has flat steps like
a regular step ladder and the other side has round rungs similar to
an extension ladder. The round-rung side slides in a hinged carrier
to provide the conversion.

This ladder was a special order from HD, but I've found it to be
extremely handy. I bought it after I saw a wallpaper hanger use
it in our stairwell with the sides unevenly adjusted in the stepladder
configuration. It has also come in handy when painting cathedral
ceilings and when getting into attic openings in a 9' ceiling.
The only down side to this ladder is that it is heavier than most
household stepladders. You also don't get the scaffold configuation
of the folding ladder that you described.

Check out http://www.wernerladder.com and search for stepladder
model C370 for a product description.

Jim
