For those that can remember, in the even earlier days, some rotary dial 
phones would make "ringing sounds" as you dialed a number.  This 
could usually be cured by swapping the tip/ring...

Tim Mullen - Aunt Bessie still has a rotary dial phone on her farm in 
Indianna...
