Brad, welcome back
I have the Esab PCM-500i Portable Plasmarc Cutting Package (
www.esab.com/html/esabna02.html ) with a Hobart 135 Handler Mig welder (
www.Hobartwelders.com/products/handler135.html ) both work excellent on
sheet metal and many other metals. The plasma cuts through rust like
butter and produces very little rust dust also keeps the sheet metal
from warping to much. For welding sheet metal I use a ER70-S .023 wire
with the auto gas mixture, weld patch panels in short beads jumping from
stitch to stitch at different spots in the weld joint, as for flux core
wire it comes in the .30 size and requires more volts to do a good job
not practical on 18ga sheet metal. A good air mini die grinder 30000 rpm
or more will cut sheet metal in a straight line fairly well with thin
cutting discs but requires a steady hand. Hope this help you decide, but
no matter what you use to get the job done it's all about having fun
restoring the oletruck.
