Happened to be watching My Classic Car on TNN this afternoon and
they had a short segment on 6 volt batteries. They briefly mentioned
that there are combination 6 / 12 volt batteries available that provide
12 volts for cranking and 6 volts for everything else.

They mentioned two types, One switches two 6 volt sections from parallel
to series when the starter is engaged, maintaining 6 volts for everything
else and allowing it to be charged with 6 volts. The two sections
are normally in parallel at 6 volts and thus can be charged with
the stock generator.

The second is a 12 volt battery with a center tap for 6 volts for
the accessories. This one is much simpler but needs a 12 volt charging
system.

The link on the show's web site for more information is as follows:

This sounds like the real thing for you guys with the "real" trucks
with 6 volt systems that want either an alternator for charging,
more cranking power for a transplant (or stock in cold weather) or
12 volts for running a radio or something. One of these systems
would let you keep all the other 6 volt stuff.
