You didn't mention valve timing. MMM engines will run with the valve timing
mis-set over quite a range, but they will only run #properly# if it's dead
right. If the cam timing is out, this could cause the problem you mention.
It's very easy to mis-set the camshaft - I'll admit to it.

Please don't take offence, but you are measuring the valve clearance between
the rocker and the #camshaft#, arn't you? Measuring at the valve as on
'normal' cars would lead to much altered valve timing.

It's also important that the eccentric bush is in the right position: Martin
Green's book reproduces the Service sheet showing this. Again the valve
timing will be altered.

Your flywheel should be marked with both TDC and IGN positions. The IGN is
for a static timing of 20 degrees advance: to this is #added# an auto
advance of nearly 20 more degrees, ie a total advance of nearly 40 degrees.
Points opening at TDC is for T-types, not MMM.
