Lew,

When I had my two J2s 50 years ago in England with low octane and slow
burning petrol the reco'd ignition setting was 20 degrees BTDC which
gave 40 degrees BTDC at speed. They went very well, without your
problems.

I think you shd try setting at about 15 degrees BTDC instead of at TDC
