I'm sure that an exploding transmission does not have the ballistic values
of two DM-51's.
To determine the ballistics of flying transmission parts would be a problem,
testing, ect.
But why take the risk for saving a few lbs, I know, weight is a problem in a
race car, but would the few lbs saved be worth the gambling, and resulting
injuries ?

Example, in the late '60's/early '70's, I raced a Fiat Abarth OT1300 (as
Fiat 850 coupe) at the Zolder track in Belgium.
My flywheel exploded, the parts broke up the bell housing, aluminum rim, and
parts were later found back stuck in the door of a car in the parking lot on
the side of the track.,
Was I glad/lucky that this car had the engine rear mounted.

Yes, that's exactly what we do.

Glad to help where I can.
