I've always heard the connection was through Prince Motors. Supposedly 
they were a licensee of Mercedes after the war. Nissan was licensee of 
Austin, Hino of Renault and there were a few others.

Nissan obtained Prince in the 60's. Some see the Prince influence in 
the U-20 and especially in the L-series.
