Ring Gear Replacmnet

I am wearing out my starter trying to find the few good spots I have let
on my ring gear. It is time to replace the ring gear and I am hoping I
do not have to pull the engine and trans (again) as one unit.  Can the
trans be removed without pulling the engine.  The only obstacle I can
foresee is the X-brace may be an issue. I would appreciate any tips from
members how have performed this task.
