I've always referred to that tool as a sump gun. I found that it can be
a pain to pull gear lube into it because the lube is so thick. If you
don't pull slowly air leaks past the piston seal. The gun I have screws
the cap where the plunger goes in from the barrel. I unscrew the cap,
then I then pour the lube in, then screw the top back on.
I also have a 1 gallon lube bottle that has a pump on it. It is not
nearly as messy as the gun, but it takes longer to fill the trans or
differential.
When the lube overflows the fill hole don't assume that the differential
is full. Wait a minute for the fluid to level, then top it off again.
Repeat as necessary.
