I think Stan was just being cute and noting a trivial point about the model
numbering.

My brother has a type 3 VW and gets annoyed when I call all air cooled boxer
motors the same. Although they have similar layout and appearance each motor
has subtle differences. Typically there are bosses in the blocks and heads
that are different. The carburetion and cooling tin is different between the
models. I think it could be closely compared to a small block Chevy motor.
There are lots of different SBC and they are all not the same. Of course the
biggest difference is that mullet head Camaro owners don't get offended when
you say that all SBC are the same.
Peace,
Andy

A comparison could be that the Datsun 1600 roadster had essentially the
same engine as the Datsun RL411 sedan while the Porsche 914 had essentially
the same engine as the VW 411 sedan.
