It IS an aggravation!  I've done it (of course) the way you describe.

I've found the easiest way is to loosen both clamps of the upper rad hose,
and disconnect it at the engine.  Then rotate the hose 90* so that the
"engine" end is vertical.

Pour coolant into the hose (with or without a funnel).
