Convertible Z cars are very loose in the middle because all they have is
the tranny tunnel, small frame rails, and rocker sills to keep the cars
together. All of these are roughly on a single flat plane (not aircraft!)
down low. As a result, the chassis flexes like a playing card bent in the
middle. If you welded in a full roll cage--one that tied the front firewall
in with the rear portion of the car--then it'd be a lot stiffer. The car
pictured, and none that I've seen, have done this. Kinda defeats the cool
look of the Z convertible. Perhaps that's why Nissan never made a
1st-generation Z convertible from the factory. Considering how cool they
look, if it was at all feasible, you'd think they'd have done it.

Also, of the 3 I've followed through construction via various Z forums, 2
were sold by their owners VERY soon after completion of the project. That
tells you something, considering the amount of work invested in building
such a car. Q: why is the current Z convertible being sold?

I'd stay away from them, despite how cool they look.
Alex
