That's how I've always done it.  With the SU's, you can have the
manifold/carb assembly off in 45 minutes easily.  As Matt stated, you may
not be able to get the starter out without unbolting the header also.  That
is not necessary with the stock exhaust manifold.  With the solex's you may
have enough clearance to get to the starter without removing the intake
manifold but again, a header may make that moot.  I remember trying once to
get it out without removing the manifolds and ended up wasting more time
farting around with it than it would have taken to just get them manifold
off.  With SU's, don't take the carbs off the manifold.  Remove it all as an
assembly.  I've also reused the intake gasket several times over without any
problems so don't be deterred by that unless you coated it with gasket
cement last time you were there.

Dan,

I found the easiest way was to, believe it or not, remove the intake and
exhaust manifolds (or header in my case).  Without taking the header off, I
cannot remove the starter.
