Rally suggets and I agree with removing the steering column first. Pretty
easy, just loosen the four bolts under the dash with a 7/16" socket and the
four on the firewall. Remove the steering wheel with a 22 mm socket and pull
the steering column towards you. Turn it a little to clear the brake pedal.
Of course loosen all wires that are on the ignition, blinkers assy. Makes
getting hands up to the tach alot easier. After you reinstall, if the
steering wheel is off, then you can reset with the large socket.

I always have the speedo shop rebuild the cable, because the new ones are so
stiff they are difficult to install on the tach.  The tach cable will want
to hit an upper bracket as I recall and it has to bend slightly down to miss
it.
