Bsck in the day when I was a Field Tech Specialist for Nissan I had a Sentra
break 5 starters in this same fashion...turned out the technician had
cannibalized the injectors off this car before it was sold to repair a
customer's car and replaced them with the wrong ones (bigger). This caused
the car to run rich and partially hydro-lock the motor. The starter would
last about 2 days, but the stress from trying to overcome the lack of
lubrication in the cylinders broke the nose off. I would look for the carbs
possibly leaking fuel into the cylinders.

PS I just learned that a person I used to eat lunch with when I worked at
BMW's headquarters in NJ was on the flight from Newark........
