Any adverse effects on cooling? It seems to me that cutting out the heater
core would reduce the amount of coolant in the system, but I remember when
the core in my 1600 went, so I will certainly consider bypassing if it
doesn't push up the heat.

Mostly, I think it was designed to leak, or get stuck in one position or
another :)
It will cut off water flow thru the heater core, so a summer/winter switch
sounds about right.
Since I live in California, I simply bypassed the whole heater circuit by
plugging up the inlet and outlet on the front of the engine and the point
where the valve screws into the manifold with threaded plugs.

My heater core will last a lot longer this way, I hope!

Imagine that :^) in the interest of "keepin' on keepin' on I have a
technical question. The valve behind the intake manifold that (seems to)
switch between the water gallery in the manifold and a pipe bolted to the
heat shield...What's it's puropse? Is it a summer/winter switch? Is it
used to switch on/off water thru the manifold?
