Your headlight relay is old and weak! Ok, don't take it personally! When I
first got my car, this was a major mystery to me! I was so sure that it was
the high beam switch, that I dissembled the steering column to clean up the
contacts. WRONG (although it probably didn't hurt in the long run). After
six more months of the same thing, the lights fail altogether. That's when I
identified the relay as the problem. I could make the lights work by hitting
the relay. But, of course, as soon as I floored it, out went the lights!
I disassembled the relay and found much corrosion and bad connections.
cleaned it up, resoldered the coil connections and Voila! Bright lights Big
City!

i noticed tonight that my lights go dim (sometimes) when accelerating in the
upper rev range. when they do go dim, the car seems to accelerate faster
than when they don't go dim. i have a 69 2000 with a 310 distributor--any
guesses? i'm assuming that the motor is getting a stronger spark when the
lights dim and that's why it accelerates faster. i just don't know what to
look at to solve the problem. is my alternator not up to the task? i'll
check in the morning to see what happens in the daylight with no lights or
accessories on.
