On my 68 this is how the cables go. Lower cable goes to the carbs and is 
threaded throught the "accelerator bar" from the rear. The clip goes on this 
cable and is pushed on from the rear also. The hand throttle cable goes in 
the top notch on the "accelerator bar" and is only held in place by pinching 
the sides of the bar together. This allows the bar to slide over the cable 
as you use the gas pedal without, as you pointed out, bending the hand 
cable.
