I had the same problem and took my car to a mechanic who told me all the
front end bushings needed to be replaced.  Replacing them helped a little
but not much.  Turned out that the cause was all four wheels being out
of round.  Apparantly the previous owner liked to drive over curbs.
Replacing the front wheels with new alloy ones and using the best of
the four original wheels in the rear took care of it.
