Another story from the cookie jar:
My wife's cousin Brian bought a new MGB in about 1979 at a Chicago area
dealer, then it was stolen from an Omaha Air Force base a few months later. The
scumbag opened the bonnet and found the spare ignition key screwed to the
firewall, which the dealer hadn't told Brian about. When the car was found
(crunched but not stripped) and hauled in to the Omaha dealer for repair, the
Omaha dealer refused to fix it, saying it was unsafe and couldn't be
warranteed.
Apparently Brian had wanted one without overdrive, so the Chicago dealer
torched out a crossbrace to remove it and throw in the standard tranny. You "B"
folks probably know the details better than I.
Anyway, here's the punchline. Brian took some photos, his lawyer, and an
affidavit from the Omaha dealer, and went to see the Chicago dealer. Came away
with a full refund, even the tax and license fees. That dealer's import
division closed up shortly thereafter, but believe it or not, his main division
is still in business selling Chevys, and his motto is "where you always save
more money".
