Well, I think the answer at best is that you want to lock occupants in,
not outsiders out. The fondly-remembered family Austin had large paddle-
like inside door releases (which I'm sure were shared with other models
in '71 and thereabouts) which you hooked your fingers around and pulled
towards you to open the door and get out. The inside door lock consisted
of a little flap that snapped backwards to cover the end of the release
paddle so you couldn't get your fingers under it to pull it, or for that
matter accidentally snag it with your sleeve at highway speeds. This was
not high-tech, but was sufficient to keep the little ones secured (and
I think it's kind of a clever design anyway :-). This, of course, was
a coupe, so yeah, you have to have outside locks on it...
Now if you'll excuse me, I accidentally locked my keys in the Spitfire
this morning, the top's down and it's starting to rain...
