Kevin, if the drive train in your '78 Land Rover is OK, you got it for a very
good price.  If its right hand drive, it is either UK or Japanese spec.

The last year the 88 was imported to the US was 1974.  Someone had to have 
brought this in special.  You occassionally see a newer one.

they are in VT & have a free catalogue

Bes shure to check fluids often in both diffs, the trans,transfer case, and
at both front axles until you get a feeling of how fast what is leaking from
where.

About one a month, you will want to put the car into 4WD for at least a couple 
of 
miles to get the front properly lubercated.

They last forever if you take care of them.  Mine's pushing 500K Mi.
